About Us
A Botanical Practice
from Yambaru
Mille Plateaux Inc. is a botanical preservation and creative practice based in Kijoka, Ogimi Village, in the Yambaru region of Okinawa, Japan.
Bringing together science, art and design, we explore ways to preserve the distinctive forms and textures of plants, transforming them into Green Objects and botanical expressions for contemporary spaces.
Our work begins with a simple belief: nature has a beauty that cannot be designed.
Beauty Lives in
the Unpredictable
No two leaves are exactly alike. Every curve, irregularity and variation carries a trace of the life that shaped it.
We do not seek to correct these differences. We believe they are what make each plant extraordinary.
Through preservation, we aim to retain something of that individuality โ allowing nature's unpredictable beauty to remain present beyond its original moment.
Rooted in Yambaru
Our practice is rooted in the landscape of Yambaru, where subtropical forests, local communities and a rich diversity of life exist in close relationship.
Working with nature also means recognizing its limits.
We do not believe that increasing demand should automatically mean taking more from the environment. Our approach is guided by ecological considerations, limited quantities and a commitment to treating plants with care.
Beyond Decoration
A Green Object is more than a decorative element.
It is a way of encountering the natural world โ its structures, its individuality and the passage of time.
Through botanical objects, spatial installations and creative collaborations, Mille Plateaux seeks to create new connections between nature and the places we inhabit.
Why Mille Plateaux?
Our name is inspired by A Thousand Plateaus by Gilles Deleuze and Fรฉlix Guattari โ a work that explores multiplicity, connection and ways of thinking beyond fixed structures.
For us, Mille Plateaux reflects a practice where nature, science, art and human imagination meet, each opening new possibilities for the others.
